Strengthen and Improve Your Memory

We can all be forgetful on occasion, and sometimes it feels like it is happening more often than you would expect. There are many things we can do to help improve our memory and strengthen our ability to recall information and facts.

There are two categories to take into consideration, and they are making lifestyle changes and doing activities that put your mind to work.  When we do not work our muscles, we lose strength. The same thing can happen to our memory and recall strength.

1. Some of the lifestyle change you may consider are:

  • Getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night
  • Exercise regularly, helping blood flow
  • Create a healthier eating plan, both foods and schedule
  • Stay busy and spend time with family and friends
  • Volunteer in your community
  • Cut back on alcohol and smoking, if these two vises are in your life
  • Take time for yourself, i.e., read, meditate, write in a journal, do what you love

Taking care of yourself can help with information retention and memory. We must feel good to be good.

2. Activities that may help strengthen your cognition are:

  • Do crossword puzzles or other word games
  • Do sudoku or other number games
  • Do brain and memory games
  • Put together a jigsaw puzzle
  • Learn a foreign language
  • Try to remember your multiplication tables
  • Play a word or memory game with a friend
  • Learn a foreign language

Engaging in these types of activities may be a way to hone your memory. Taking care of ourselves and challenging our mind are steps in the right direction.

It is normal to forget things at times and this is a good reminder to start acting on doing activities that will help improve our brain functions.
